How to Add YouTube Chapters With Timestamps (Official Rules)

Add YouTube chapters that actually activate. Official timestamp rules and a practical workflow using Repurpose AI's free summarizer, transcript, and description tools.

Long videos are easier to watch when the scrubber has labeled sections. YouTube calls those sections video chapters. You create them by putting timestamps and titles in the description, not in a separate Studio tab.

This post covers the chapter pass: the official rules that make chapters show up, then a simple way to map sections before you paste anything. It is not another full packaging guide. Why Chapters Are a Description Job

YouTube's Video Chapters Help page says you add your own chapters by listing timestamps and titles in the video description, then saving in YouTube Studio. Chapters break the video into sections with individual previews. They give each portion a label and let people jump back without guessing.

On the watch page, chapters show on the progress bar. Titles appear as you scrub. Viewers can also find chapters in the description or in the chapter title above the progress bar.

The "chapter feature" is mostly description formatting plus a Studio save. If the list is wrong, chapters do not activate.

Official Rules That Make Chapters Work

Help lists three hard requirements for your own chapters:

1. The first timestamp must start with 00:00.
2. You need at least three timestamps, listed in ascending order.
3. Each chapter must be at least 10 seconds long.

Studio path from the same Help article: sign in to YouTube Studio, open Content, open the video, put the timestamp list in the Description, click Save. Help also notes that this manual list overrides automatic video chapters.

Keep the rest of the description inside the 5,000-character limit. If you add corrections, Help says that Corrections block should appear after any video chapters.

A minimal pattern that matches the rules:

00:00 Introduction
01:20 Hook and problem
04:05 Demo walkthrough
09:40 Recap and next steps

Use real times from your video. Do not invent neat round numbers if the section actually starts at 01:17.

Manual Chapters vs Automatic Chapters

YouTube can also generate automatic chapters when a video is eligible. In Studio, under SHOW MORE, you can allow automatic chapters. Help says that box is checked by default for new uploads, and you can allow automatic chapters in bulk.

Two caveats from Help matter day to day:

• Not all videos are eligible, and not every eligible video will get automatic chapters.
• If the channel has active strikes, or if the content may be inappropriate to some viewers, the video chapters feature will not be available.

You can opt out for one video, or turn automatic chapters off in upload defaults under Advanced settings. When you paste your own timestamp list, that list wins over auto chapters.

Automatic chapters save time when they appear. Manual chapters are what you use when the section names have to be right.

Map Sections Before You Type Timestamps

Typing timestamps cold is how people end up with "Part 1 / Part 2" and a first stamp that is not 00:00. Map the video first.

A workable order:

1. State the job. Are chapters for viewers on the watch page, for your own edit checklist, or both?

3. Confirm the moments you will label. Write Titles Viewers Can Scrub To

Chapter titles are labels on the scrubber, not blog headlines. Prefer plain names for what happens in that stretch: "Install the CLI", "Pricing objections", "Live demo fail and fix". Skip empty labels like "Part 1" when you can name the actual beat.

Help does not ask for keyword stuffing. It asks for a valid timestamp list. Write titles a tired viewer can read in one glance.

Chapters may also appear in transcripts, per the Video Chapters Help page. Keep titles accurate. Clever labels age poorly next to the audio.

Paste Into Studio Without Breaking the List

When the map is ready:

1. Open the video in YouTube Studio → Content.
2. Put the timestamp list in the Description. Keep the first line at 00:00.
3. Keep at least three stamps, ascending, with each chapter at least 10 seconds.
4. Place other description copy around the list without splitting a timestamp mid-line. Leave room under the 5,000-character cap for links, CTAs, and chapters together.
5. If you use Corrections, put that block after the chapter list, as Help instructs.
6. Save, then play the video and scrub the bar to confirm chapters appeared.

Mistakes That Prevent Chapters From Appearing

These break chapters more often than "bad SEO":

• First timestamp is not 00:00 (for example 0:15 intro).
• Only one or two timestamps.
• A chapter shorter than 10 seconds.
• Timestamps out of order.
• Relying on automatic chapters for a video that is not eligible, or while the channel has an active strike.
• Pasting a full description draft and forgetting the timestamp list.

If chapters are missing after save, re-check the three Help requirements before you rewrite the whole description.

Final Check

Before you call the upload done:

• First stamp is 00:00
• At least three ascending timestamps
• Every chapter is at least 10 seconds
• Titles match what actually happens in each section
• Description still under 5,000 characters
• You scrubbed the live player and saw the chapter markers
